What it is
What is trailer interchange insurance?
When you pull a trailer you don't own under a written trailer interchange agreement, you're legally responsible for physical damage to that trailer while it's in your care, custody and control. Trailer interchange insurance covers that responsibility. Equipment providers and interchange partners require proof of it before a unit leaves the yard.
CargoLabs is building a dedicated per-trip trailer interchange product so carriers can meet that requirement for exactly the days they have the trailer. In the meantime, the daily Physical Damage product's non-owned & undescribed trailer option covers a non-owned trailer by the day, and lease and trailer interchange agreements can be executed concurrently with the insurance purchase.
Why it matters
Interchange partners want proof before release
Rental yards, intermodal pools and interchange partners want a certificate covering the trailer, not a promise. Without one the unit doesn't move.
Agreement and coverage should travel together
The interchange agreement creates the obligation; the coverage satisfies it. Executing both in one flow removes the back-and-forth.
Per-trip is the right unit
You have the trailer for a few days, not a year. Coverage priced by the trip matches how interchange actually works.

Trailer Interchange Insurance, answered
- What is trailer interchange insurance?
- Coverage for your legal liability for physical damage to a trailer you don't own while it's in your possession under a written trailer interchange agreement. It's what interchange partners ask carriers to prove before releasing a unit.
- Can I buy trailer interchange coverage from CargoLabs today?
- A dedicated per-trip trailer interchange product is in development. Today you can cover a non-owned trailer by the day using the Physical Damage product's non-owned & undescribed trailer option, and sign the trailer interchange agreement in the same flow.
- How is trailer interchange different from physical damage on my own trailer?
- Physical damage covers equipment you own and schedule on your policy. Trailer interchange covers your responsibility for someone else's trailer under an interchange agreement. The non-owned trailer option on daily physical damage is the closest match available today.
- Can the trailer interchange agreement be executed digitally?
- Yes. Lease agreements and trailer interchange agreements can be executed concurrently with an insurance purchase in the CargoLabs flow, and the certificate is emailed instantly.
- How can I find out when per-trip trailer interchange launches?
- Get started with CargoLabs and your agent will let you know when the dedicated product is available. Carriers already using daily physical damage on non-owned trailers will be first to hear.
